Richard E. Knight, biography

Upon admission to the Virginia State bar in October 1972, I began the active practice of law in Arlington County.

Academic Background:  I had graduated from the Marshall Wythe School of Law at William and Mary (J.D. 1972) immediately after graduating from the College of William and Mary (B. A. 1969) with a major in American History.

Pre-college:  During the year before college I was employed as a classified courier for the Department of Defense at the Pentagon from 1964 to 1965.

Bar Admissions:  I am admitted to the U. S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, the U. S. Courts of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the Supreme Court of Virginia.

Early Legal Career:  The law firm I joined in 1972 had a legal practice focusing on wills, trusts, estate planning, and insurance law. In 1980 I began my own law practice in Arlington, Virginia where I continue to practice law. My practice grew into wills, trust and estate practice as my clients’ families developed those legal needs,

My membership in professional organizations includes the Virginia State Bar’s Section on Trust and Estates, the Arlington County Bar Association’s Section on Trust and Estates, and the McLean Estate Planning Council.

Community Interests:  I was a Director for ten years and President of a the board of directors of a major condominium, where I assisted in resolving the legal issues with its developer. As an active member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Arlington, Virginia, I have served on the Vestry and as Senior Warden and am currently one of the Trustees of my church. Presently I enjoy being a member of the Optimist Club of Arlington, Virginia, an organization  supporting the youth of Arlington through by awarding scholarships and sponsoring service and athletics programs for youths.

Personal:  I married and live in Vienna, Virginia, having been a native of and being raised in Northern Virginia.
